Notes from Vijay Joshi, MD:
Before Prof S. J Nagolatimath (SJN) and Prof Vijay V Joshi (VVJ) met at the 1994 International Congress of IAP in Madrid, each of them had independently organized CME courses in India. During the discussions in Madrid, they decided to join forces and the plan for an annual International CME in Surgical Pathology and Cytology, co-sponsored by AIPNA and ICP, was hatched. Prof. SJN agreed to be the local co-ordinator for the first joint CME course to be held in Mysore in 1996. Prof VVJ agreed to be the North American co-ordinator for the first and subsequent CME courses. North American faculty consisting of primarily NRIs and supplemented by Native North Americans covering different topics of their expertise was chosen by Prof VVJ from those who graciously volunteered to participate. One faculty member from India was chosen by Prof. SJN. The main objective of the CME course are:
a) To provide update in Surgical Pathology and Cytology with emphasis on practical aspects such as new classification of tumors and other lesions, recently developed criteria for different entities, including new entities, clinico-pathologic correlation and advanced techniques including Molecular Pathology.
b) To motivate Pathologists and Pathology trainees in India to sub-specialize in various sub-specialities in Surgical Pathology and Cytology.
c) To provide a forum for dialogue between NRI Pathologists and Pathologists and their organiations in India.
The framework of the CME has been as follows:
a. Local co-ordinator in India provides the facilities, organizational network for holding the CME course, printing of the Proceedings and providing local hospitality for the visiting faculty.
b. The North American faculty provides their expertise as an honorary gesture and themselves bear all the expenses for presentation and travel in India.
The CME program has been held successfully every year since 1996 (See list below). From the third CME course the local co-ordinator in India changed every year depending upon the venue of the course. After acting as the North American Co-ordinator for the first six CME courses, Prof. VVJ passed on that responsibility to Prof. Venkat Challa while continuing to be Emeritus Co-ordinator and an actively participating faculty member until the 12th CME course. Prof VC was assisted in the capacity of Associate Co-ordinator during alternate years by Dr. Nirag Jhala and Dr Shrinivas Mandavilli. In 2008 Prof. VC passed on his responsibility to Prof. Ashraf Khan. Besides these co-ordinators over 50 faculty members from N. America have participated voluntarily in these courses and have a lions share in the success of these CME courses, which on an average are attended by 100 registrants every year from all over India. The CME courses have also been successful in attaining their objectives listed above.
